Explain this:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I have about 1,500 pounds of hardwood flooring to pick up on friday. I wanted to make sure I would be able to (safely) make it from the supplier to home so I started looking into the payload capacity of the available vehicles. How is it possible that my father’s Tacoma TRD only has a payload of 910 lbs which is being put to shame by the worlds most despised form of vehicle?

The plan is to put 50% in each vehicle to keep things as easy as possible.

I’m sure i’ll have to buy 100 lbs of nails at some point.

any advice on laying hardwood? I have 3 1/4" prefinished maple. I’ve only done a wide plank pine floor before, where I face nailed with square cut nails. This floor is all concealed nails.

Specs I founds said ~1300lbs. As for the difference, probably something like this?

he looked it up in his owners manual. 910 lbs plus 2 people. I havnt verified mine but no matter what with the given range, its higher.

There is a massive difference in the tow capacity though. But here is something to consider about the van:

Say you want to haul 6 people who weight 200LBs. Which isn’t an unheard of scenario. You just put 1200LBs of payload into it.

yea, he has the full 4 door cab, I suspected that had a lot to do with it. It must push the load rearward so its more centered over the rear axle where as a regular cab, some of that weight would go to the front

that is true. On the way back from Montreal, the other vehicle on our trip was a Subary Legacy with 4 rather large guys. there was substantial sag in the back, easily noticeable from my vehicle.

Vans rock, I think the Ford E-250 has like a 12,000 lb payload rating or something. I got my old V6 F150 specifically because it had the highest payload rating of the F150s from that year, moreso than the V8s.

Anyway, good luck with the floor. Why do you have to nail it anyway, or is it not grooved?

Hockey players and hockey bags aren’t light. Plus the payload is much better distributed across the axles in a van. The Taco also isn’t a very big truck, and the crew cab adds weight that takes away from the payload.

I find it pretty funny that my ‘91 Jeep is still rated for more payload than a modern Taco.

I’d say rent a numatic floor hammer, swinging a 4lb all day absolutely wrecks you.

I’m guessing the Taco has standard load tires whereas the minuvan has extra load tires.

I like this. From now on all payload ratings must be expressed in hockey bags.

You should RTFM and see if the manufacturer calls for nails or floating or adhesive. My parents are doing wood floors in their house and the entire floor needs to have essentially thinset floor adhesive.

Depends. If it’s an engineered floor, meant to be a floating floor, then no, you don’t. If it’s a hardwood floor, it may be meant to be nailed down. You lay the board, and use a flooring nailer to drive a nail or staple into the subfloor inside the groove, I think.

Use an underlayment to prevent squeaking and creaking.

I havnt gotten the frickin manual yet, i’m guessing it will come with the wood. I’m guessing they are doing some sort of engineered composite (vs solid hardwood)?

The TRD has a lower payload than the standard Tacoma because its suspension is set up for travel not payload. Although it’s only about a 200lbs difference.

I was just shocked that it was that low, and that the van was that high. once I thought it through, it started making sense, but it was a big initial shock to se a minivan outdo a truck

The Quest and Pathfinder must share the transmission. I think the best part is the quick power delivery, you dont have to wait for the auto to think about which gear it wants to eventually shift into.

A few years back, the upper trim ecodiesel Ram’s had a payload rating of about 1000 lbs. A fullsize truck with a payload barely better than the average midsize sedan. SMH.

A solid maple nail down floor means you’re going to want to rent a pnuematic floor nailer. Hopefully you’ve got a decent sized air compressor to go with it. It’s pretty straight forward installation, just be careful not to split the tongue.

Kinja'd!!! OPPOsaurus WRX > shop-teacher
10/25/2017 at 11:13

Kinja'd!!!0

i have a good compressor. would you nail the tongue or the groove?

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > OPPOsaurus WRX
10/25/2017 at 11:25

Kinja'd!!!1

Nail the tongue. The flooring nailer sits on the top of the tongue. Snap a chalk line about 3-1/2" from the wall (you want a gap all the way around for expansion/contraction). Carefully line up the first row’s tongue to that (groove side to the wall you’re starting on). Face nail the wall side of that row with a trim nailer, 15 or 16 gauge trim nails. Some people face nail the first two or three rows completely. I like to just use the trim nailer really carefully through the tongue on that first row, then keep using the trim nailer through the tongue on each course until you’re far enough away from the wall to get the proper floor nailer in, usually 3-4 courses of flooring. That way no nails end up showing, this is particularly key because you’ve got a prefinished floor. I’m a big fan of prefinished flooring, because the finish they can bake on aat the factory is way harder than what can be done on site.

The flooring will almost certainly fight you some, you’re going to have to so some “persuading” to get the grooves fully engaged with the tongues. The flooring nailer will come with a soft faced mallet that can do a lot of that, but there will be more stubborn areas where you have to use a scrap of flooring and a hammer to beat it into place.

Pull the seats out of the van and the payload will increase by their weight. Like others have said, the TRD is setup for off road performance (travel), not load capacity. Look at the payloads of the Raptor or even the Dodge POwer Wagon. Significantly lower than their normal counterparts.

I have no comment on the truck vs. van debate.

But that kitchen looks like the inspiration for our own. Very similar colors, dark wood topped island with sagey-green cabinets there, and white-ish cabinets elsewhere... that’s where the similarities stop. That kitchen in the picture is like, the size of my first floor. OK not quite, but close.

same here. We’re going to paint all out cabinets that green color. The floor we got is lighter than what is shown. I’m going to build an island and have the beam above set up for smaller pendant lights. That kitchen is also close in size to my livingroom-diningroom-kitchen

Shop around for a good underlayment. The right material can make a huge difference in how noisy the floor will be. The underlayment also determines how the floor is installed - either nailed down or floating.

Thanks, yeah - it looks better in person than in those crappy pics. It really helps use the limited space we have much better than before. (Did you see the South Park recently where they renovate houses...?)

The exposed beams were a huge reason we bought the house in the first place. All the ceilings are like that, and there’s that giant 10x14 beam down the middle of the house. I grew up in a post & beam house and have always loved the style, the strength of it all, and the fact that none of the walls are structural.
